Fear Falls Away

I traveled to the west side of Baboquivari Peak on the Tohono O'odham Reservation in the late afternoon to paint this wrap-around cover art for Fear Falls Away: And Other Essays from Hard and Rocky Places, by Janice Emily Bowers, published by the University of Arizona Press. I have a personal connection to this place because I climbed it once years ago, as the author did in her essay for the book. The peak is considered to be the center of the world and thus is sacred to the O'odham Tribe.

Both covers for Janice Bowers were painted with traditional media: Fear Falls Away with opaque Watercolor, The Mountains Next Door with pastel.
